Born in Sweden. Her parents and siblings emmigrate to the US and Minnesota when she is about 5, but she stays behind with her grandparents for another 10 years and does not come until 1903. She initially works as a house servant and cook for logging camps in northern Minnesota and Duluth. She meets her future husband, Svante Carlson while in Duluth. They marry in 1917 and live in various locations in Minnesota as their 7 children are born. Two of their sons do not live past infancy. The other five survive to maturity. Svante and Lydia live in Montecello the longest, from about 1929 to 1944, when Svante dies of stomach cancer. Lydia Carlson subsequently moves to Minneapolis. She outlives her husband by 27 years, dying in 1971 at age 84.
